Greetings from Hughson Alternative Education.  The 2017-18 school year is upon us and we are happy to have students returning to Billy Joe Dickens Continuation High School and Valley Community Day School and we offer a special welcome to the new students joining us this year.

Alternative education is a transitional period.  It is extremely important to remember that we all build on small successes.  Having said this, each student will acquire the skills he/she needs to be academically successful in their future endeavors.  In order to secure the best for your child educationally, we encourage you to work with us on maintaining a positive self-image and a safe environment conducive for learning.

For safety purposes, no large, bulky coats are to be worn to school.  If your child brings a cell phone to school they are to turn it into the office before school and can pick it up at the end of the school day.  Backpacks are to be stored in the school office and will be returned after school as well.

Here are some ways you can help your child be successful in Dickens High School and Valley Community Day School:

  • Look for and read any written communication from the school or the staff.  We tend to send home important information that can keep you updated with what is going on in the school and classroom.  Information included in this packet which needs parental signatures and needs to be returned the first week of school is as follows:

                1.         National School Lunch Program

                2.         Dress Code

                3.         Tardy Policy

                4.         Student Emergency Card

  • We believe in fair and consistent discipline that encourages students to be responsible for themselves.  At school, we try to create a safe environment where courtesy and kindness prevail and where there is respect for differences in other people, customs and cultures.  Please refer to the school dress code and tardy policy for further information concerning discipline and detention policy.
  • Finally, communicate with teachers and staff.  If you have any problems, questions, concerns, and/or successes regarding your child, please contact the school, and we will do our best to talk and/or meet with you at our earliest convenience.

Our traditional school calendar will start August 8th at 7:45 a.m. sharp for Dickens High School.  The school day will be from 7:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.  School times for Valley Community Day School are 8:00 a.m. to 2:45 a.m.  Please remember no student is to leave campus without parental permission.  Students needing to leave the school site early must bring a signed note from a parent excusing the student or the office must receive a phone call from the parents/guardian to excuse the student early.  Students are enrolled in classes for each period of the day; early checkout is discouraged as this is a disruption of the educational process.  We encourage you to make all medical and non-medical appointments after the school day ends.  All students and parents must report to the office and sign out before leaving campus.

With your help we are looking forward to the 2017-18 school year being one of the best ever in Dickens High School and Valley Community Day School.  Hence, with your cooperation, we can create meaningful experiences that will promote growth in your child so that he/she may thrive in society.  Please, remember that the academic achievement of all students requires a collaborative effort on all fronts from educators, parents, and the community.  If you have any ideas, comments, and or suggestions, we want to hear from you.  Communication is essential if our school is fulfilling its mission.
